March 21, 2003 Martin 0 vs. Flower Mound 1 Second Round Area Play Off By Greg Booher
After a 90 minute delay of a match which both teams seemed more than ready to play, the Martin High School Warriors took the field against the Flower Mound Jaguars for the second round of the 2003 high school soccer play offs. In the early stages of the match, both teams had opportunities to break on top. The Jaguars seemed to hold a slight edge effectively and aggressively countering Warrior attacks as the Warriors seemed to be off to somewhat of a slow start. Finally as the action moved back and forth, a rather non - threatening cross into the Warrior box mysteriously made it through untouched to the right corner of the goal to a Jaguar mid fielder's feet. Warrior goalie Josh Franklin anticipated perfectly as the Warrior defense was unable to clear the ball. The Jaguar player, however, got there just in time to sneak the ball underneath him for an early tally to give the Jaguars a 1 - 0 lead. On a positive note, Josh made some outstanding saves in the match!
After this early goal, Martin seemed to respond to the wake up call and the momentum definitely changed in favor of the Warriors for the remainder of the half. Many close chances went awry as the half ended with the Jaguars up 1 - 0.
In the early going of the second half, the match seemed a stand off. The Warriors attacked at times, but again the speedy counters and excellent ball control skills of the Jaguar mid field frustrated a talented Warrior squad. As the last 20 minutes of the contest began, the Warriors again pressed the action in search of the tying goal. Daniel Brown knifed a hard ground shot just inside the right goal post for what appeared to be the tally that was desperately needed. The Jaguar goalie dove hard to his right and just got a piece of the ball to deflect it wide. Martin managed several corner kicks including the one following this shot as the Warriors played with increasing determination. Unfortunately it was not to be on this night. The back of the net could not be found on this evening as the match ended. Martin Warriors 0 - Flower Mound 1. Both teams are to be congratulated on a very intense well played match.
Unfortunately this is the final game report of the 2003 soccer campaign for the mighty Warriors of Martin High School. I think it goes without saying that all of us parents, school officials, coaches and fellow students are very proud of what this fine group of young men has accomplished this year. It is always sad and always frustrating to think of what could have been, but it is best to focus on the outstanding accomplishments this group has made during this year. Bottom line…..our mighty Warriors ended their season with 17 victories, 4 defeats & 3 ties. This record will stand as one of the best in the metroplex. The Warriors should hold their heads high, because they deserve to. No player on this squad lost anything....they each gained tremendously!
We sadly say goodbye to 16 fine seniors and wish them only the best. We should also give special recognition to the fine leadership Senior Captains Josh Franklin, Daniel Brown & Steven Shows put forth. You have set a fine example for the Warrior underclassmen to follow.
Another tremendous job by Coach Naughton! Thanks coach, from all of us. Salute to the 2003 Martin Warrior Soccer Team!!

March 11, 2003 Martin 7 vs Paschal 0 By Greg Booher
Well, for the first time in five seasons there is an undisputed District Champ in 6 - 5A Boys Champion. The Martin Warriors! And yet, there is Co - Champions in the district. While the Martin Boys polished off Paschal for a perfect 10 - 0 District season, the Martin Girls topped the Paschal Girls to avenge their previous loss and to win the District title out right! Way to go Girls!!
The Martin boys' game could be summed up in one word…”domination”. The boys took control of the match from the opening whistle and never lost it. Clint Kaiser began the onslaught, scoring off an assist by Daniel Brown for an early 1 - 0 lead. Chris Holmes subbed in midway through the first half and proceeded to score two back to back goals for the Warriors. The first was assisted by Steven Shows with the second being scored unassisted. Half time came with the District Champs up 3 - zip!
In the second half there was more of the same, except much of it came from the Warrior bench. That depth keeps showing up! Early in the second Steven Shows scored off an assist from Adam Bosillo. Many substitutions were made and this did not even put a dent in the Warrior domination over the Panthers.
Elijah Snow racked up the next tally off of a feed from Colin Booher. Cril Thomas put in two in a row. The first was assisted by Travis Tyner and Will Pryor. His second was assisted by Nathan Foss.
This should be said…..the Paschal Panthers did lose soundly to a superior Warrior Club, but they did so with class. They played all their matches this year without much success and yet, unlike many others in their shoes, they played hard, they played clean and they really seemed to love the game of soccer. Way to go Panthers. You played hard in spite of the odds and you represented your school well!
Overall a great match to cap the undefeated District Season by the Warriors. In case you lost count, the final was Martin 7 - Paschal 0.
Now the final season begins for both the Warrior Girls and Boys. State here we come!

March 7, 2003 Martin 2 vs Lamar 0 by Jack Hines
Senior Night
Once a year we take the time to honor the men of the senior class and pay tribute to the desire that got them here. This year we salute 16 hard working young men. Thanks for the ffort, spirit, and determination you display each and every time you take the field. The class of 85 will be remembered as a special one. Martin began the night with a sense of urgency, knowing Lamar was fighting for a playoff spot. At the 5 minute mark a corner kick was served in and Steven Shows was able to control it and pass to Daniel Brown who ripped it thru a forest of legs to put Martin up 1 - 0. With the Martin defenders stifling the Lamar attack and serving balls to the Warrior attackers there were several near misses as the half wore on. Nearing the end of the half on another corner kick Brody Sager fed Clint Kaiser who scored thru that same forest of legs. Lamar was packing the defense in to slow the Warrior attack but accurate shots by Brown and Kaiser had the Warriors up 2 - 0 at half.
The second half was scoreless but it saw a continuation of outstanding play by keeper Josh Franklin who tipped several balls wide of the post or over the bar. The Warrior defense of JP Serrano,Landon Cox,Wade Vinall,Travis Ernst,Brent Kaiser and Daniel Hines kept the Viking attack under pressure all night. Its truly a pleasure to watch these young men play at such a high level on a regular basis. Martin is shooting for an undefeated district season on Tuesday night at Paschal, hope to see ya there. GO WARRIORS !!!

March 3, 2003 Martin 2 vs Sam Houston 1 By Greg Booher
Whew! Is everyone glad we probably have played Sam Houston for the last time this year? What the Texans lack in talent, they certainly make up for in speed, quickness and most of all aggressiveness and tenacity. Got the picture? If the Texans made the playoffs….some team out there might get a surprise! While the Warriors made it 3 - 0 in the three matches with Sam, this one was not any easier than the other two. Those pesky Texans just do not quit!
Daniel Brown took the first shot of the match. Colin Booher took a few long shots during the match and Brody Sager, Steven Shows and others had tries as the Warriors continued to press the action in what became a very physical match. Sam did manage a couple of chances in the first half, but at last Daniel literally powered the ball through the Texan goalie off an assist from Adam Bosillo for a half time 1 - 0 Martin lead.
But wouldn't you know it! As Martin pressed early in the second half, the Texans got a throw in that sailed into the box as several Warrior defenders (this doesn't happen folks!) missed the ball and it fell in front of a Texan attacker who proceeded to deposit the ball past goalie Josh Franklin. Those Texans wanted this match!
With the wind at their backs, the Warriors took up where they left off and did not seemed rattled by the 1 - 1 tie. The Warrior defense of Brent Kaiser, Landon Cox, Wade Vinall, Travis Ernst and Daniel Hines really clamped down after that Texan goal.
With plenty of time on the clock, the Warriors pressed again in a match that was becoming more and more physical. One stand out, heads up, tough guy play was made by Adam Bosillo as he beat one defender, once, twice, no…three times to break free for a nice attack on goal. This type of play was typical during the latter part of the match. A few cards flew but the match went forward. Finally Clint Kaiser scored a nice goal late and the Warriors prevailed once more to maintain their unblemished district record. Warriors are 8 - 0 in District Play. Can you smell the playoffs???

March 1, 2003 Martin 1 vs Arlington 0 By Jack Hines
With the treat of the baseball announcer in the background combining with the threat of being bopped on the head by a homerun, nervous excitement was running amok in the crowd as our Warriors took on the Colts. The Colts added to the nervousness by remaining a threat until the last tick of the clock. It was clear from the outset Martin was the better team but as often happens the net was hard to find. With about 8 minutes gone Steven Shows was lining up a shot from 12 yards out when a Colt player simply ran over him. The ref awarded a penalty kick and Daniel Brown came thru with the only goal of the match.
Martin had several first half chances but all the shots went high or wide. At the 13 minute mark Brown shot one over the crossbar and 6 minutes later Shows had a header sail over the bar also. With less than a minute left in the half Shows caught the keeper off his line and ripped a 25 yarder that hit the crossbar and rebounded back into play. The Colt keeper was able to snare it in the ensuing scramble.
The second half was more of the same, near misses by the Warriors. At the 10 minute mark Adam Bosillo had a ball squirt to him in the Colt box and he sank in disbelief as his shot sailed over the crossbar. Martin had other chances in the half but the rest of the day was owned by keeper Josh Franklin. With Arlington pressing an all out attack looking to tie the game Franklin made several good stops and one great one. At the 35 minute mark a Colt player ripped a low screamer that was headed for the net. Franklin made a full out dive to his right and smothered the ball to preserve his shutout and delight the Warrior fans.
The defense played an outstanding game in slippery conditions and the field played a part with the five yard football lines causing several bad touches. The game clock ticked down with the Colts having the ball in the Warriors box and sending a roller thru the heart of the goal area just as time expired. The Warriors aided the Colts by committing several fouls as time was winding down, but the defense held strong and took home the win. The undefeated district streak continues and the team character is building with the close wins as well as the blowouts. Kudos to the Colts for a hard fought contest. GO WARRIORS!!!!!

February 21, 2003, Martin 6 vs Bowie 0 By Jack Hines
Temps were in the low fifties, add a steady drizzle and a brisk north wind and you get typical Texas high school soccer weather. Kudos to the parents, family, and friends that showed up to support the Warriors as they took on Bowie at Maverick stadium on the UTA campus. The match was an old fashioned tail whipping as Martin dominated every phase of the contest. The scoring was regular and often as the Warriors midfield and forwards continuously beat the Bowie squad. Daniel Brown got it started 10 minutes in when Trey McCord gave him the ball, Brown beat a defender and scored near post. At the 32 minute mark Brody Sager assisted on an Adam Bosillo goal and the half ended 2 - 0 Martin.
The second half saw the Warriors really get into gear as 5 minutes in McCord scored off a Bosillo assist. Less than 1 minute later Brown scored with Wade Vinall getting the assist. At the 13 minute mark Steven Shows carried a ball to the Bowie goal line, drew the keeper to him and sent a cross thru the box that Bosillo finished off. At the midpoint of the half Clint Kaiser fed Shows who scored the final goal of the contest.
The last two games have resulted in a combined score of 12 - 0 with superb play in all three areas of the field leading the Warriors to convincing wins. The defense posted its ninth shutout with goalkeeper Josh Franklin getting his sixth. Outstanding is an apt description for the state of our Warrior team. Next up is Arlington on Friday the 28th. Hope to see ya there. GO WARRIORS!!!

February 18, 2003 Martin 6 vs Paschal 0 By Greg Booher
"Warriors Bag Panthers!”
In the first half, the Martin Warriors took advantage of the wind to control the game, but they could not control the runaway ball. The play was predominantly on top of the Panther goal, but shots by Trey McCord & Steven Shows did not find the net. Long distance free kicks assisted by that strong wind turned into near misses by Brent Kaiser & Wade Vinall.
Adam Bosillo finally put the Warriors on top off of a cross from Wade to initiate the scoring on the night as Martin went up 1-0. The Warriors continued to dominate the Panthers as Brody Sager fired a nice shot from the right side.
Paschal did mount somewhat of a surge just before half time and actually had a couple of nice chances, but Josh Franklin made the saves, one of which was a smash mouth play! Halftime came with the Warriors up 1-0.
Second half action began with Martin pressing the action early now facing into the strong wind. This actually seemed to help the Warriors control the ball much better and this was the case for the rest of the match.
Daniel Brown fought through to the right side and proceeded to put a beautiful cross through the Panther goal box which Trey McCord easily shot into the back of the net for a 2-0 Warrior lead. The dominance remained as the Warriors had many nice chances.
Daniel finally got on the board himself as he expertly beat the Panther goalie on a breakaway and calmly rolled the ball home for a now growing 3-0 lead for the mighty Warriors.
Soon after, Daniel got his second assist of the night as Adam Bosillo racked up his second goal. The Warriors rolled on 4-0. Trey McCord then scored number two for himself as he stared incredibly at what appeared to be an intended cross that found its way into the upper left corner just over the outstretched Panther goalies' hands for a 5-0 lead. Intended cross or intended shot….Trey will take that goal and so will the Warriors!
As time wore on, Coach Naughton began to sub in the outstanding players from the Warrior bench. As the subbing began, Travis Tyner netted his first goal of the year as he was awarded a PK on a takedown in the box. Great job Travis!
Finally, Elijah Snow, Nathan Foss, Matt Slingerland, JP Serrano, Nick Edwards, Will Pryor, Evan Callahan and Travis got good minutes and the incredible depth the Warriors enjoy was obvious!
The team never missed a beat as the Warriors did bag those Panthers….6-0!!

February 14, 2003 Martin 2 vs Lamar 1 By Jack Hines
On an unusually warm night the Warriors took on the Vikings in a match that Lamar took very serious. The first half was a back and forth affair with both teams having scoring chances. Nearing the end of the first half Trey McCord corraled a bouncing ball and buried it in the upper left corner from 20 yards out.The shot was so quick the Lamar keeper never even moved until it was time to retrieve the ball from the back of the net. It was a short lived lead as less than a minute later Lamar scored to tie the game.
The second half saw the Warriors versatility as several players played two and even three positions. The final tally came midway thru the half as Daniel Brown made the Lamar keeper pay for leaving his line. The ball was served forward and as the keeper came out Brown beat him to the ball and scored easily. This was the first time in a while Martin was really pressed and had to pick it up a notch to get the win. Give Lamar credit for extending the Warriors and give Martin credit for responding in a positive hard working manner. Sweeper back Landon Cox took a knock but thankfully was able to return. The health of the team seems to be finally turning the corner and lets hope all the players will be ready to play soon. Next up is Paschal who beat Bowie 3-2 on Saturday. Hope to see ya there GO WARRIORS!!!

February 11, 2003 Martin 5 vs Sam Houston 1 by Greg Booher
We all remember the last time we played Sam Houston. It was during the Martin Invitational. The Warriors survived a scare with a late goal for a 1-0 victory. But…..that game was on turf!
This week district play continued as the Warriors traveled to Wileman Stadium for a rematch with the Texans. This time, on grass!
With that said, the first half seemed to indicate that the pesky Texans were going to give the Warriors another tough match, but Steven Shows finally broke the ice with a nice goal which was assisted by Clint Kaiser. That was all the Warriors could muster, however, and the half ended 1-0 Warriors.
The second half was very different. Early on though, the Texans held tough. Steven put in his second goal of the game assisted by Adam Bosillo and it finally seemed as thought the tide was really shifting the Warriors way. Yet, Sam mounted a quick counter off a increasingly aggressive Warrior attack and a Texan forward, slipped by the Warrior defender to accomplish a breakaway with the Warrior defense pushed up. Colin Booher made a valiant effort to get back from the stopper position, but the Texan forward just managed to slip the ball by Josh Franklin as Josh rushed to cut off the angle. That made the tally 2-1 Warriors.
There was no let down by the Warriors though as they responded with indifference to the Texan goal like a champion would! Daniel Brown proceeded to bury the Texans with two consecutive goals with one unassisted and one assist from Clint Kaiser again. Clint had a nice game!
Finally Steven Shows got the benchmark “hat trick” with his 3rd goal coming off an assist from Brody Sager.
The Warriors dominated with 10 shots on goal to the Texans 3. The Warriors had 10 corner shots and the Texans 1. The final, 5-1…..business taken care of! Good job Warriors!

February 8, 2003 Martin 2 vs Arlington High 0 By Greg Booher
First half action of this important early district match up could be described in one word, “slow”. The Warriors and the Colts seemed evenly matched during the first stanza, yet Martin did appear to maybe have a slight edge. Adam Bosillo took perhaps the first legitimate shot on goal of the game. Clint Kaiser got off a long chance, but the first 20 minutes were painfully slow as each team seemed to be feeling each other out. Bosillo got another nice chance off of a feed from Colin Booher and later Brody Sager also had a chance. The Colts never really tested Josh Franklin during the first half.
Early in the second half the Warriors pressed the action early and Trey McCord got off a good shot. The Colts began to use quick counters off the Warrior attack and it almost worked. Josh Franklin seemed to easily snag an easy shot, but the Colt attacker got there almost at the same time and the ball came free. With Josh out of the goal the Colt forward ripped a quick shot, but Daniel Hines came to the rescue as he chested the ball and the ball was cleared. The Warrior back line of Daniel Hines, Wade Vinall and Travis Ernst did an outstanding job considering one of their mainstays, Landon Cox, was out sick!
Moments later the Warriors were on the Colt goal once more and continued action in front of the net gave Chris Venegas a header opportunity, but the Colt goalie grabbed it. Steven Shows took a nice shot, however, it sailed high. Daniel Brown just missed a free kick wide right from about the 25 as the Warriors continued to experience near misses. Later Brown got the opportunity to finally break the ice, but his one on one with the goalie also flew just left of the mark. Finally the Warriors broke the ice as Chris Holmes fought hard on the left side to put a through ball into the box which Brown deposited into the net for a 1 - 0 lead. The outburst wasn't over though! Moments later Brody Sager knocked one through to the right side of the Colt box and Adam Bosillo smashed it past the Colt goalie for a sudden 2 - 0 lead in a game that had seemed to be headed for a 0 - 0 tie. With the clock now a factor, this sudden eruption by Martin led the Warriors to a 2 - 0 victory over the Colts to go undefeated the first week of district play. Way to go Warriors!
By the way….the Lady Warriors shocked the Colt girls 2 - 0 just prior to the boys match. Way to go Lady Warriors!!

Feb 4 2003 Martin 4 vs Bowie 1 By Jack Hines
District has arrived as the Warriors took on the Bowie Volunteers on a cool Tuesday evening at Warrior field. Martin controlled possession from the start and peppered the Bowie goal with multiple shots. Midway thru the first half Chris Holmes scored his first goal of the contest. Trey McCord took a free kick that rebounded off the Bowie keeper and Holmes was there to knock it home. Near halftime Clint Kaiser assisted on a Daniel Brown goal to put Martin up 2 to 0. Holmes got his second goal midway thru the second half as he beat 3 defenders with the dribble and ripped it into the net. Shortly after, Bowie made it 3-1 with a good shot from Alex Dixon. McCord finished the scoring just before the end of the game on a good shot that beat the Bowie keeper. The Warriors showed great intensity and superior skills in the convincing win while still missing some players. The bench played a vital role in keeping the level of play at a high caliber. The underclassmen really stepped up and performed well. Goalkeeper Josh Franklin lost his shutout on an unfortunate deflection that went straight to the Bowie player who was able to finish it. Next up is Arlington on Friday if the weather allows. GO WARRIORS!!!

January 31, 2003 Martin 2 vs. Flower Mound 2 By Greg Booher
If you missed this game, you missed an excellent, yet very physical soccer match! The Warriors appeared to have really come to make a statement on this night. Early on the Warriors put the ball into the net for what appeared to be an early lead, but the linesman had called the ball just out over the end line before Adam Bosillo's cross that created the shot. Martin seemed to get the best of the action, yet Flower Mound's defense and their quick counter attacks kept the Warriors at bay as the half moved forward. The game was indeed physical as the referee kept his whistle quite and let the teams play.
With 4:20 left in the first half, Trey McCord got off a nice attempt after a feed from Brody Sager. Shortly afterwards Daniel Brown ripped a nice one from about the 15, but it sailed just wide. Before the end of the half though, the Jaguars got off one of their quick counters on a break away and managed a chip over the pushed up goalie, Josh Franklin. Fortunately this attempt sailed just wide as well. It was great to have Josh back from injury, even though sophomore Kyle Butler has done an outstanding job filling in the last few weeks!
Early in the second half, the Warriors broke the ice first as Trey McCord sent a nice ball over the top and Daniel Brown finished it for the first goal of the game. 1 - 0 Warriors!
Martin continued to press the action as Brent Kaiser and Colin Booher dominated the middle and Brody Sager and Clint Kaiser both had good scoring chances. But the Jaguars displayed good team play as they surged back. A foul in the box led to a PK goal for the Jaguars and the match was suddenly knotted at 1 -1 just when Martin seemed to be taking control.
Flower Mound continued the sudden surge and scored their second goal shortly afterward. The fresh legs of Cril Thomas and Evan Callahan helped give the Warrior starters some needed rest to prepare for a strong finish. The tide began to swing back to the Warriors as Daniel Brown missed another close chance.
Martin continued to press the action with a renewed sense of urgency similar to the way they began the match. Down 2 - 1, Travis Ernst fought hard on the right side and put a through ball into the box. An attacking Trey McCord smashed the ball past the Jaguar goalie for the 2 -2 tie. (whew!)
The remaining action before the horn was pretty much a standoff as both teams seemed exhausted and unable to mount a charge to break the tie as the clock ran down. This was one of the most exciting games to watch so far this year! Great job by both teams!

January 28, 2003 Martin 1 vs. The Colony 1 By Greg Booher
Martin ventured across the Metroplex to take on The Colony Cougars. The game began innocently enough. Then, on a very questionable foul call that appeared to be well outside the goal box, the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick and led off the scoring for a very early 1- 0 lead.
Our Warriors responded by pressing the action. During a quick barrage on the Cougar goal, not one, but two shots at close range deflected off of the cross bar with a final shot by Trey McCord that sailed just high. Martin continued to press the action and late in the first half the Cougars s returned the favor when Steve Shows was fouled in the box.
Daniel Brown proceeded to deposit the penalty kick into the left corner for a 1 - 1 tie which held up through half time.
The second half action was somewhat slow with Daniel Brown and Adam Bosillo just missing close chances. In the last 20 minutes Colin Booher had a good slide tackle to win the ball, got up and fired a rocket from the 20 which was just high. Another close chance lost. Sound familiar?
The Warrior defense of Landon Cox, Travis Ernst, Wade Vinal and Chris Holmes (subbing in this night for the injured Daniel Hines) put up a valiant performance. The Cougars were awarded a free kick late and fired a rocket shot. As the crowd held their breath, Kyle Butler calmly scarfed it up to preserve the tie. Clint Kaiser and Brody Sager also had good chances during the match.
The Warriors probably walked away feeling they should have come away with more than a 1 - 1 tie, but the preseason learning experience continues as they prepare for next week's beginning of district play. Next stop, Flower Mound.

11th Annuual Martin Invitational Tournament Warrior Game Reports
By Jack Hines
Saturday Championship game Martin 1 - Marcus 1 (shootout loss)
Shades of Georgetown surfaced when Martin dominated the game but wound up on the losing end as Marcus took the trophy with a shootout win. Brody Sager just missed a goal in the first half when Daniel
Brown led him thru on a perfect pass. Sager received the ball well, two touched it and fired it inches outside the far post. Martin got its goal midway thru the second half as Steven Shows was taken down just as he was lining up a shot resulting in a penalty kick. Daniel Brown slammed it home on the PK and Martin was in control. With time running out Marcus got a free kick that the wall blocked. In the ensuing scramble the referee called a handball and awarded Marcus a last chance from 30 yards out and 3 seconds left. The shot came in low and hard and out of the reach of a diving Kyle Butler. Marcus had tied the game with a second left. Martin made a valiant attempt in the shootout but came up short for a repeat of out last shootout loss.
The MIT showed what a dominating team the Warriors have and that we are a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming season. The sting of this loss will lessen if we play up to our potential and reach our final destination which is, as always, The State Tournament. Congratulations to Marcus for a fine display of never giving up and to the Martin Warriors for the sportsmanship and courage they displayed in a heartbreaking loss. GO WARRIORS !!!
Saturday Martin 1 - Sam Houston 0
This game was best described as disorganized. Martin scored its lone goal at 23 minutes of the second half when Brody Sager served a corner kick that Colin Booher headed home. The best defensive play of the game occurred when keeper Kyle Butler leaped and, fully extended, pushed a header attempt wide. The ball was surely a goal without that touch. Sam Houston was outnumbered and overmatched from the start but they displayed great determination and effort in the contest. The defense posted its seventh shutout of the season.
Friday Martin 3 - Grapevine 0
Martin displayed the talent that makes the program one of the states best as Adam Bosillo took the offensive load and scored two first half goals. At 23 minutes in Brent Kaiser served a great ball just over the defenders head. Bosillo picked the ball out of the air and dribbled around the keeper and scored. Seven minutes later the two teamed up again as Kaiser sent a thru ball that Bosillo stole off the keepers fingers and ripped into the net. Barely a minute later Wade Vinall lofted a long ball to Daniel Brown who out jumped the defenders and headed the ball over the keeper into the net. Martin took the 3 goal lead into halftime. The second half was a see saw affair with both teams getting a few chances but no goals. The defense recorded its sixth shutout of the season and the midfield of Shows, Kaiser, Sager, Booher, Thomas and Venegas controlled the game throughout.
Thursday Martin 5 - Lakeview 1
The Warriors put on an offensive show in the first half by scoring 4 unanswered goals with Daniel Brown getting two goals. One came from a PK and the other off an assist from Brent Kaiser. Steven Shows scored unassisted and Clint Kaiser knocked one home off an assist from Brown. The second half saw Brown get the hat trick when Daniel Hines lofted a perfect pass over the defenders head that Brown caught in stride and beat the keeper for Martins fifth goal. Lakeview got on the board with a quick restart shot from 25 yards out on a free kick play. The shot found the side netting at the back post. Once again the defense had an outstanding game completely shutting down the Lakeview attack.

January 13, 2003 Martin 5 vs Summit 0 By Jack Hines
Typical Texas high school soccer weather including temperatures in the forties and a brisk north wind were the conditions as Martin faced Summit. The Warriors wasted no time getting ahead as Adam Bosillo gathered in a rebound off a Daniel Brown shot and scored less than one minute into the game. Four minutes later Brent Kaiser dribbled thru two defenders and beat the keeper from 16 yards out for a 2-0 Martin lead. At 24 minutes Daniel Brown hit an awesome free kick from 22 yards that beat the keeper far post. Steven Shows ended the first half scoring when at 37 minutes he worked his way up the middle through several defenders and hit a low screamer into the left side netting. Martin led 4-0 with all the goals being low left corner shots. Clint Kaiser had a good half as he continually applied pressure to the Summit defense.
The second half began much as the first half had when seven minutes in Daniel Brown dribbled thru a sea of defenders pulled the keeper to himself and rolled a perfect ball to a trailing Steven Shows who knocked it home. Martin led 5-0.Coach Naughton displayed the team depth at this point by pulling most of the starters. The results were good as Martin continued to dominate by getting scoring chances and totally shutting down the Summit attack. Kyle Butler did an outstanding job filling in for an injured Josh Franklin and the defense of Cox, Hines, Ernst, Vinall, and Serrano held Summit to four shots on goal. Once again Martin displayed superior ball control and attacking capabilities while the defense posted its fourth consecutive shutout. Next up is the Martin Invitational Tournament and the Warriors look primed for a run at the championship. Please support the teams and the booster club by volunteering and attending as many games as possible. See ya at the MIT. GO WARRIORS!!

Jaunary 11, Georgetown Governor's Cup 1/9 - 1/11 By: Larry Brown
The Varsity Team traveled to Georgetown to participate in the 2003 Governor's Cup. It was obvious from the beginning that the Warriors came to play. Thursday's game against Clearlake was played at Eagle Stadium, site of the State Final Four Tournament. Judging from the caliber of play against the '02 State-Finalist, we might expect an opportunity to play there again. Martin defeated Clearlake by a score of 3-0. The scoring began when Junior Brent Kaiser finished a header from Senior Steven Shows. Junior Brody Sager and Senior Daniel Brown both added unassisted goals in the second half to distance the Warriors from Clearlake. Goalkeeper Josh Franklin earned his first shut out of the season with the outstanding defensive support of Seniors Daniel Hines, Landon Cox, Travis Ernst, Chris Homes, Wade Vinall and J. P. Serrano.
On Friday, the outstanding play continued as the Warriors defeated Austin Westlake 2-0. Adam Bosillo scored his first goal of the season at the 9minute mark, with an assist given to Brown. Brown completed the scoring in the second half unassisted. The outstanding defensive play continued as the Warriors logged the second shutout.
Expectations where high as Saturday began while the Warriors dismantled A&M Consolidated by the score of 3-0. With 29 points, Martin was assured a spot in the Governor's Cup Final. In what was an extremely physical game, the team displayed their talents. In a scary moment Junior Cril Thomas and Holmes collided heads. Both players lay on the field for a frightening period. Both players did not return for the remainder of the tournament. Martin scoring began with Shows assisted by Brown. Brown then recorded the second and third goals with assists from Bosillo and Shows. Outstanding game play was contributed from Senior Clint Kasier and Sophomore Colin Booher.
The Championship game was played on a cold and drizzly night against Kingwood. Martin outplayed their opponent for the bulk of the evening. Multiple scoring opportunities came from Shows, Brent Kaiser, Clint Kaiser and Brown. Brown found himself on more than one occasion one on one with the Kingwood keeper, however nothing found the net. Late in the game, Keeper Franklin rejected a Kingwood scoring opportunity at the cost of a broken finger. This would prove very costly, as the game would be determined in a shoot-out, requiring Franklin to take on 5 close range shots. His efforts were valiant, but Martin came up short, 3-2.
As many of you may know, the Martin Warrior Soccer Program has lost one of its greatest supporters. As I began putting this article together, my Mother, Daniel's Grandmother, was gravely ill. I have completed it on the day of her funeral. You may or may not have known her. She was a fixture at Martin over the last three years. She was the kindly old lady sitting down front, yelling at the officials. My family and I would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of you who have supported us with your prayers and assistance in this very difficult time. God bless you and GO WARRIORS!!!

Martin vs Plano UTA Maverick Stadium January 7, 2003 By Jack Hines
The conditions were great for a matchup of two soccer powerhouses as the Martin Warriors hosted the Plano Wildcats. Plano got on the board first when at the two minute mark the ball was sent into the Martin box. The defense cleared the ball out but it landed at the feet of a Plano player who ripped a left footed 25 yard rocket past a diving Josh Franklin. Josh got a finger tip on the ball but it was a great shot and it found the net. The first half was a contrast in styles as Martin played a ball control passing style and Plano played a long ball and chase style. At the 24 minute mark Steven Shows sent a header off a corner kick that just missed the near post. Martin evened the game at the 28 minute mark when Wade Vinall sent a free kick into the Plano box. The ball carried better than the Plano keeper anticipated and bounced into the goal. The first half ended in a 1-1 tie with Martin dominating ball possession.
The second half saw both teams getting several chances. Eight minutes in, Trey Mccord had a nice header that the Plano keeper handled well. At the 18 minute mark. Brody Sager made a nice cutback move and went in on the Plano keeper. He made a good shot that was headed for the near corner but the Plano keeper was able to deflect it wide for a corner kick. The game took on a physical aspect as Plano made some rough tackles. Brent Kaiser showed his toughness, after being fouled extra hard he calmly got up and watched the offending Plano player being sent off with his well deserved yellow card. The defense had an outstanding game limiting Plano to four or five scoring chances. Travis Ernst made a smart defensive play by heading the ball back to his keeper rather than risk trying to beat two onrushing Plano players. The fans were pleased with the effort and skill Martin displayed and considered it a good start to the season.

Alumni Game January 4th, 2003 By Larry Brown
In what may have been one of the most pleasant days in recent memory for the Alumni Game, the 2003 Soccer season began with a great turnout of Alumni players and parents. With over 25 alumni players returning, we had one of the best turnouts in recent years. With classes ranging from 1996 - 2002, some of Martin's greatest players were displayed for our enjoyment. Players such as Michael Blackburn, Josh Gibbs, Sean McCord, Volk Vinall, and the Besanson Brothers, Bill and John show why Martin has had such a lengthy run as a state powerhouse. But today belonged to the current group. The offensive play of Daniel Brown, Trey McCord and Steven Shows accounted for the scoring which led the current team to a 5-3 victory.
The Varsity boys struck early and put the pressure on their seniors in what became a traditional heated battle. As usual, the tide turned late in the game as the Alumni supplemented the usual allotment of players in an attempt to level the game. However, keepers Josh Franklin and Kyle Butler were up to the challenge to stem the Alumni's late rush. But as usual when the game was over the two teams enjoyed the annual pizza party in the cafeteria.
Comments from the coach indicate we should expect great things from the current class. For the first time in a long time it appears that Coach Naughton has the offensive punch he has so desired. Offensive expectations from players such as Adam Bosillo and Clint Kaiser supplementing the previous trio should provide a potent scoring capacity. With Coach Naughton's return of the flat four defense, which allowed only thirteen goals last year, Martins' preseason ranking appears to be warranted. Defenders Daniel Hines, Travis Ernst, Chris Holmes, and Landon Cox were up to the relentless challenges placed by Martins' glorious past. They also appear to be prepared for an extremely challenging schedule. We should know soon enough with games this week against Plano and the trip to Georgetown.
As we begin this journey, we all hope that we find the success that has traditionally come to our program.
Our coaches and players expect nothing less. GO WARRIORS!!
