2003 JV Black Game Reports
|
March 14, 2003 JV Black 5 vs Seguin 0 By Mike McMahan
Martin goals were more plentiful than mosquitos tonight, and that's saying a lot. The first came 18 minutes into the game on a goal by Matthew Carroll, resulting from a well placed cross by Ryan Batchelor. The second goal was the same song, different verse, when Carroll took advantage of the goalie's inability to handle a Batchelor corner kick and popped the rebound into the net. Martin's third goal was put in by Seguin's keeper, and the fourth goal of the game would come thanks to the extra effort put forth by Beom Park, after being subbed in as a forward. It was only fitting that Park would be rewarded for his hard work all year with his first goal of the season.
The fifth and final goal was made on a perfectly executed corner kick by Batchelor. The rest of the half, Martin began substituting players, many in non-traditional positions. Evidently, the strategy behind these substitutions was to confuse the opposition so as to make it possible for Cletus Steele to score a goal. Steele was all over the field, shooting it left, shooting it right, shooting it high, shooting it everywhere a player could shoot it and still not put it in the goal. Alas, even with the brilliant strategy of Coach Mays combined with the valiant effort put forth by all of the Martin Players, a goal by Cletus Steele was not to be.
The most intelligent play of the night occurred with less than two minutes left, when Coach Tim Mays grabbed the Igloo Cooler, casually walked to the storm drain and emptied the contents much to the chagrin of the players on the bench, thus preventing the traditional celebratory dousing. Seriously though, it was a great season Martin JV Black!!! Good luck next year!!

March 10, 2003 Game 1 - Martin 2 vs Fossil Ridge 1 By Mike McMahan
Keeper Clifton Caraway was threatened immediately by being forced to stop in succession a hard shot, a corner kick, and another hard shot on goal. However, Ryan Batchelor returned the favor by scoring on a beautiful corner kick 11 minutes into the game. Just three minutes later, Quinn Markham, Miles Callahan, and Matthew Carroll pressured Fossil Ridge in front of the net, which set up another corner kick by Batchelor. Batchelor placed it perfectly in front of the net, where Quinn Markham headed it in for Martin's second goal. Martin would have had a third goal, but they were ruled offsides. Minutes later, Fossil Ridge answered with a goal of their own. Beom Park used his speed effectively to make several nice defensive plays throughout the first half.
Although Martin pressured in the second half, they could never put anything on net. The good news is that neither could fossil Ridge. Park was again all over the field making good defensive plays with the help of Steven Seybold, Quinn Markham, and others. Toward the end of the game, Dex made a great save by punching a shot by Fossil Ridge out of the top of the net. Martin held on to win the game 2-1.
March 10,2003 Game 2 - Martin 1 vs Fossil Ridge 2 By Mike McMahan
The combination of Martin JV Black players and Martin JV Red players did not quite gel tonight. Passing, ball control, and positioning were pretty much non-existent, with players putting forth good individual effort, but not using their teammates effectively. Early in the game, Blake Sanders made a fantastic play by clearing a Fossil Ridge shot that was Martin's keeper was not quite able to control. However, Fossil Ridge eventually came back to put it in the back of the net making the score 1-0. Martin answered minutes later, when John Hubbard worked to gain possession and facing immense pressure from several Fossil Ridge players, drove the ball in the back of the net to tie the score at 1.
At the start of the second half Joseph Lavis from JV Red and Cletus Steele combined to put a scare into Fossil Ridge, but Fossil Ridge regained possession and drove the length of the field to score. Steele and Patrick McMahan combined for several shots on goal, but could never convert, and Fossil Ridge would hang on to win 2-1. The result was understandable considering these players had never competed together as a team before tonight.

March 7,2003 JV Black 0 vs. Lamar 0 By Mike McMahan
After tying Lamar in their previous game earlier in the season, Martin showed up expecting a competitive match and that is exactly what they got. Both teams' physical play, combined with the narrow field at Hutchinson, made passing difficult and affected Martin's transition game, ultimately resulting in a pretty ugly game. There were several near misses by Matthew Carroll, Cleatus Steele, Patrick McMahan, and others, but none made it in the net. Beom Park had another stellar game at defense, Charles Reed made the most of his first start as goalkeeper by stopping everything that came near the goal. Although Martin outplayed Lamar throughout most of the game, Lamar deserves credit for stopping everything Martin threw at them. The game ended tied at 0-0.

March 3,2003 Martin JV Black 2 vs Sam Houston 0 by Mike McMahan
Well, it was nice to finally get to watch some soccer after a two week layoff, and it was actually pretty decent weather; at least it was above 40E. The first half was marked by strong play by Martin on both offense and defense. There was a close call right off the bat when Quinn Markham and Mathew Carroll worked the ball to Patrick McMahan, who ran through the goalkeeper to get a shot off, only to miss right of the goal. Sam Houston put a scare into the Martin side of the stands seconds later with their own shot over goal. Nine minutes in, McMahan worked the ball to Quinn Markham who was mauled at the goal face, yet still managed to get a shot off to score Martin's first goal of the game. Three minutes later, Carroll headed a trademark Ryan Batchelor cornerkick toward the net, enabling McMahan to head it in, to put Martin ahead 2-0 ( I guess you could call it a “double header”). Beom Park, Ryan Batchelor, Kyle Adam, and Steven Seybold again had a good solid half on defense.
The defense played the prominent role in the second half. Ryan Batchelor, who seems to improve with every game he plays, made several key defensive plays in the second half. Although there was a lot of pressure from Sam Houston on several occasions, the defense led by Batchelor, Blake Sanders, Michael Williams, and Steven Seybold managed to keep Sam Houston off the scoreboard. Markham, John Hubbard and Cletus Steele were all over the field not only making some great defensive plays, but also scaring the heck out of Sam Houston's goalkeeper on several occasions. Although at times Martin reverted to playing kickball, they ultimately found their game and defeated a tough Sam Houston team 2-0.
Keeper Dex Norman played heads up ball the entire game by being strong positionally and by making aggressive plays to cut off any attack Sam Houston was able to mount. If soccer was like hockey and awards were given for stars of the game, I would have to vote for Dex as the #1 star. Since soccer isn't hockey, I don't have to decide who the other two stars would be, thank goodness.

February 17, 2003 JV Black 7 vs. Grand Prairie 2 by Mike McMahan
Martin scared the gophers back in their holes at the Gopher Bowl tonight. They dominated from the beginning with aggressive play and excellent ball control on both offense and defense. Cleatus Steele, who, to put it lightly, was not happy with a tie against Lamar, evidently decided to take his frustrations out on Grand Prairie. He played strong on the ball all night and had numerous well-placed throw-ins that led to both successful and unsuccessful scoring attempts. The first goal occurred five minutes into the game when Steele made a nice throw-in to Quinn Markham who drove it in the back of the net. There were a couple more well placed throw-ins to Patrick McMahan and Ryan Batchelor, but neither could convert.
At the eight minute mark Grand Prairie was penalized for a hand ball which resulted in McMahan scoring on the PK. At the thirty-two minute mark, Grand Prairie answered with their own PK to make the score 2-1. With a little more than a minute left in the first half, Jeff Cleveland made a great steal followed by a nice through pass to Charles Madkins, who deposited it in the net left of the keeper to make it 3-1 at the half. The first half was also marked by strong defensive play by Beom Park, Michael Williams, Steven Seybold, Ryan Batchelor, and keeper Dex Norman; they seldom left the ball in their zone long enough for Grand Prairie to get a shot off.
During the second half, it was more of the same with some different faces and a few people playing different positions. Four minutes in, McMahan stole the ball and passed to Steven Seybold, who passed to Charles Madkins, who then sprinted up the right side and drove the ball in the back of the net for his second goal of the game. Six minutes into the second half, Steele again made a great throw-in to John Hubbard who put the ball into the right side of the net to give Martin a 5-1 lead. Eleven minutes in, Martin was given a free kick which McMahan placed in the net over the keeper's head for a 6-1 lead. At the twenty minute mark, Grand Prairie scored on a PK to move them within 4. The final goal of the game came at the twenty-eight minute mark when Matthew Carroll made a nice run up the right side and centered it to Adam Martinez, who scored to move Martin ahead 7-2.
Sweeper Blake Sanders led the defense in the second half by making several nice plays to clear the ball from Martin's zone. Martin again showed what team play can accomplish: 22 players, many not mentioned by name, put forth their best effort tonight which resulted in 7 goals being spread among 5 players and limited the opposing team to 2 PK's.

February 13, 2003 JV Black 1 vs Lamar 1 by Mike McMahan
Martin didn't play last week due to inclement weather; and the long layoff showed in the first half of Thursday's game against Lamar. If you didn't know better, you would swear it was two different teams playing in the first half and the second half. The first half could be best described as lethargic. The team impersonating Martin had poor ball control perhaps in part due to the poor playing conditions, and were badly outplayed in the first half, culminating in a goal by Lamar 16 minutes in.. Martin seemed to come alive toward the end of the second half when Patrick McMahan headed a Ryan Batchelor throw-in to Quinn Markham who drove it into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
The real Martin JV Black team showed up at the beginning of the second half featuring outstanding play by Ryan Batchelor, Michael Williams, Quinn Markham, and others. Batchelor had several steals which he followed with nice passes, however Martin could never convert those into goals. The game became more physical as time wore on, with Williams and Markham sacrificing their bodies on several occasions to gain possession of the ball. Markham was mauled at the 30 minute mark, followed by a Lamar player getting yellow card for unsportsmanlike language. This resulted in a free kick by McMahan to the top left corner, which was bobbled, but ultimately handled by the goalie. Martin continued to put pressure on Lamar late in the game with shots by Markham, Carroll, and Batchelor. In the last minute of the game Beom Park, under intense pressure, dribbled the ball up field and passed to McMahan who in turn drove to the net. Unfortunately, McMahan was stopped just short of the net by four Lamar defenders who had a little help from the mud and the clock. Although the Martin players were disappointed with the game ending in a 1-1 tie, they can be proud of the way they stepped up their game in the second half and continued to pressure Lamar until the very end.

JV Black vs. Arlington 01/30/03 by Mike McMahan
Martin came ready to play tonight; unfortunately, so did Arlington's Goalkeeper. Martin came on strong from the outset, keeping the ball in the Arlington end most of the game. There were a lot of “OHHHH!” moments throughout the game, mostly due to scoring chances around Arlington's goal. Martin's forwards were able to get quite a few shots on goal; however, strong goal tending by Arlington kept the score tied at the end of the first half.
At the 23 minute mark of the second half, Arlington's goalkeeper mishandled a shot by Patrick McMahan giving Miles Callahan the chance he needed to drive it home for a 1-0 Martin lead. Although there were a couple of scares, Martin would hang on to win 1-0.
Throughout the game Martin made good use of the entire field and showed big improvement in their ball movement. They played so well as a team that it is hard to pick out individuals for special attention; nevertheless, a special pat on the back is due to Quinn Markham and John Hubbard for their strong play on both sides of the ball.

JV Black vs. Colleyville 01/24/03 by Mike McMahan
The MHS JV Black team played the Colleyville Panthers Friday night. Martin had some good chances early in the game, but they were unable to put any in the net. Strong play by Clifton Caraway and the rest of the defense kept the score tied at half-time.
At the beginning of the second half Martin again put pressure on the Colleyville goalkeeper. A well placed corner kick by Ryan Batchelor resulted in a header by Michael Arnold narrowly missing the net wide right. Goalkeeper Dex Norman made a couple of great saves; one, a hard shot from the center outside the box, and the second, a spectacular diving save stopping a hard low shot to his right. At the 25 minute mark Batchelor made a well placed pass up the middle to Michael Arnold, who was fouled in the box. Patrick McMahan finally put Martin on the scoreboard by firing the PK into the right side of the net. Colleyville answered with a goal of their own two minutes later. With the small but vocal group of Martin fans urging them on, Martin continued to put pressure on Colleyville. With five minutes left, Matthew Carroll followed up a shot on goal and pressured the keeper into bobbling the ball. Michael Arnold was in perfect position to dump it in the back of the net. Martin held on to win the game 2-1.

JV Black vs Bowie 1/22/03 By Kristi Carroll
The MHS JV Black team played the Bowie Volunteers at UTA stadium. John Hubbard got the Warriors off to a good start with a goal 4 minutes into the game, followed by another on a cross from Matt Carroll 2 minutes later. Charles Madkins scored 2 more goals to finish out the half. The defense did a great job and as a result, goalie, Clifton Caraway never touched the ball. The Warriors came out and dominated the 2nd half of the game as well. Patrick McMahan scored off a cross, again from Matt Carroll. Quinn Markham scored the final goal of the game to bring the Warriors home 6-0.

JV Black vs L. D. Bell 1/14/03 By Kristi Carroll
The JV Black soccer season continued as they traveled to face the L.D. Bell Blue Raiders at Pennington Field. The game got off to a great start for the Warriors when John Hubbard put the ball in the back of the net after only 3 minutes of play. Later in the half, Quinn Markham made a superb shot on goal that was barely denied, and Blake Sanders made a fantastic defensive save 2 minutes before the end of the half. The 2nd half looked promising as Cleatus Steele blocked a Raider free kick and Patrick McMahan had a great shot on goal. The Raiders managed to score 13 minutes into the 2nd half. Both teams were determined to win, but it was not to be. The final score was a tie 1-1. Great saves were made by both the Warrior goalies, Clifton Caraway and Dex Norman.

JV Black vs. Southlake Carroll January 7, 2003 By Kristi Carroll
The JV Black soccer season officially began tonight at Warrior stadium when they faced Southlake Carroll. The teams appeared to be evenly matched as they traded shots on goal. The Warrior goalie, Clifton Caraway, did an impressive job as he made repeated saves of attempted shots by the SL Carroll offense. The Warriors had several scoring opportunities off the crossbar and near misses past the posts, but were unable to finish. It looked as though the game would go scoreless until, with only a minute remaining in the match, SL Carroll managed to slip the ball into the goal. The final score was 1-0.

JV Red-JV Black Scrimmage January 4th, 2003 By Larry Brown
It was a beautiful January day that saw the 2003 Junior Varsity season begin. In a heated match between two Junior Varsity teams of one of the strongest high school soccer programs in the nation, the JV Red team prevailed against their juniors by a score of 5-0. Sophomore Brandon Williamson got the hat trick while Chris Schneider completed the scoring for the Red with 2 goals of his own. The black team's best opportunity came when Freshman Quinn Markham narrowly missed a free kick opportunity in the first half. The JV Red team displayed the depth of the program with the outstanding play of sweeper Sean Loveland, defenders Jeff Mullin, and Charles Grones. The JV Red teams offense was supplemented by the play of Stephen Brown, Theo Bruton, and Tanner McNulty.
Outstanding plays from JV Black players came from freshman Matt Carrol, Ryan Batchelor, Charles Reed and Cleatus Steele. Both teams were supported by outstanding play from their keepers Dex Norman, Philip Venegas, and Eric Nguyen.
Its obvious from the talent displayed that the Martin tradition will continue. We should expect no less than two district championships from teams of this caliber. GO WARRIORS!!
