Season Begins with Alumni Scrimmage
January 8, 2005
By: Larry Brown

I'm like a kid in a candy store at this time of year. The high school soccer season is finally here! We had a wonderful day for the annual alumni scrimmage.  The numbers grow each year as the former players give in to the desire to revisit past glories. I know my alum holds his memories at Martin fondly. Coach Naughton has done a terrific job building an outstanding soccer program, but I believe his greatest gift is the difference he makes in so many young men's lives. This is displayed each year with the joyful reunions.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the alumni game but I was at the field long enough to see most of the turnout. Some great players from Martin's past glory were in attendance. 'From that great `04 class, players like Brody Sager, Trey McCord, Brent Kaiser, Daniel Korman and Cril Thomas made us remember that playoff run. '03 players such as Daniel Brown, Josh Franklin, Landon Cox, Travis Ernst and Wade Vinall were there displaying their talents. The '02 contingent included Mark Dornan, Jeff Shows, Billy Ray Thomas, Rick Partridge, Jon Cruz, Patrick Mullin and David Nobles, who enjoyed the day. The class of '01 was well represented by the likes of Dale Davis, Patrick Andis and Michael Woods. There are just too many to keep up with! As always, some true old-timers showed up. I know that there was a player from the class of 1990 but I didn't get his name. One of Martin's alumni who selected soccer as a profession, SMU coach Brent Erwin, returned to show his talents. However, the day belonged to the current varsity team. My reporters tell me that newcomer Bryan Sajjadi scored the first goal of the match by dribbling the keeper. Stephen Brown also recorded a goal off a throw-in from Casey Cartusciello.  The current team scored again but my reporter was busy socializing with old friends and truly doesn't remember who scored. Oh well, it really doesn't matter. As usual, the senior crew played with more than the acceptable allotment of players. I understand that the substitution rules were waived for the match. [Editor's note:  I don't think anyone will soon forget the alumni corner kick with 17 forward - see photo page.]  As always, everyone enjoyed the pizza party after the game.

Well, the teams are set. The yard signs are out. The season begins this week. The Varsity travels to the Coppell Tournament with the first game again El Paso Coronado on Thursday. If we are successful, we may see #1 state-ranked Coppell in the finals. Let's load-up all that winter gear and get ready. It's going to be a great year.

Season Open as Martin Defeats El Paso Coronado 3-2
January 13, 2005
By: Larry Brown

The 2005 High School Soccer Season began for the Warriors at the Coppell Kickoff Classic. Martin's opponent for the first game was El Paso Coronado. The Warriors got on track early and put the pressure on with a beautiful cross from Chris Schneider to Theo Bruton within the first 7 minutes.  At the 10 minute mark, the pressure continued with a beautiful rush that resulted in a blistering shot from Casey Herd that rattled the top post. In the melee that followed, Stephen Brown made a great attempt to finish with a bicycle shot. Schneider had started the push with a nice run. Chris was not done, at the 25 minute mark he had a breakaway that resulted in a nice shot.  Ian Smith followed the attempt, but the ball failed to find the net. The game was more than 30 minutes old before the Warriors found the net. Bryan Walker started the push by playing a nice ball to Herd who in turn fed Smith for the first goal of the evening. Just a few minutes later, Colin Booher  recorded the second goal of the evening, lacing a shot off a restart. Martin led 2-0 at half.

The Warriors' domination continued in the 2nd half. Brown recorded the final goal of the evening for the Warriors on a PK after he was taken down from behind on a breakaway. The defense played terrifically most of the evening. Chris Weber, Jeff Mullin, Casey Cartusciello, Quinn Markham and Chris Bush supported keepers Kyle Butler and Philip Venegas for the bulk of the evening. However, with less than 2 minutes left in the match, Coronado was able to squeeze in two late goals.

Coronado proved to be an admirable opponent. The Warriors played well in their opening match. The season is long, and I'm sure that Coach Naughton was pleased with the performance he saw tonight.

Tough Tarrant County Battle
January 14, 2005
By: Larry Brown

Your Martin Warriors met the LD Bell Blue Raiders in a second round match of the Coppell Kickoff Classic. This appeared to be a highly anticipated match as players from both teams saw familiar faces from club games. The match was well played by both teams. The first half play was very balanced. Less than 10 minutes into the match, Colin Booher launched the first shot just wide. Just a few minutes later, Bell stuck first and Martin trailed 1-0. The Warriors had plenty of opportunities:  Stephen Brown had multiple chances, and combo plays from Chris Schneider and Casey Herd resulted in shots on goals. The Warriors ran play “Number 1” off the corner-kick with Stephen having a great chance, but Martin could not level the match. It was not until late in the half that the Warriors would record the tying goal. Quinn Markham started the play that resulted in Schneider chipping a pass that Brown lobbed over the shocked Blue Raider keeper, making the score 1-1 at half.

Martin dominated the second half. The play focused on Martin's offensive end. The Warriors were presented with multiple opportunities. Ian Smith, Patrick McMahan and Brown each had great chances, but the ball just could not find the net.

Through the years, I have found that it is much easier to write these reports when we win. I have witnessed many high school games and many shoot-outs. It's a terrible way to determine a winner. Tonight the Blue Raiders were the lucky ones; they got the preferred next match. The Warriors continue to their third match without an opportunity to play the top team in the area. Oh well, there is always next week. As the team prepares for the annual trip to Georgetown, let's hope that the games are determined in regulation and that the Warriors bring home the trophy.

Martin Defeats Socorro 3-1 in final match at Coppell Kickoff Classic
January 15, 2005
By: Larry Brown

The Warriors completed their draw in the Kickoff Classic by defeating Socorro by a score of 3-1. The team showed no sign of lingering disappointment from the previous night's game, as they started the match strong. On a day where the Warriors were running the set plays to perfection, the first scoring opportunity came early. Chris Schneider, Ian Smith and Stephen Brown executed the initial corner restart. Chris took the corner, playing a perfect ball. Stephen and Ian had touches but the ball rattled around the goal and didn't find the net. Philip Venegas started in goal for Martin and made a number of spectacular saves in the first half. The defense played well, anchored by Chris Weber and Colin Booher in the middle with Quinn Markham, Jeff Mullin, Chris Bush and Casey Cartusciello patrolling the outside. The first goal on the morning came at the 17:30 mark with Smith making a nice cross that found Brown's head. Martin led early 1-0. Just 10 minutes later Schneider took another corner kick. He played a beautiful ball that found Stephen on the run. Brown headed the ball home and the Warriors lead 2-0. The offense was not done. Brandon Williamson, playing up top, made a nice run, gathering the ball at the 18. He pushed forward to goal and executed a perfect cross hitting an on-rushing Brown who completed his hat-trick. The first half ended 3-0, Martin.

The Warriors began the 2nd half with a fury. Given their intensity, I thought the score would reach double digits. Although the team had many opportunities, we just couldn't finish. Bryan Walker had some good chances, as did Casey Herd, but the Socorro defense managed to keep the ball out of their goal. As the game began to wind down, the West Texas bunch began putting more pressure on, which ultimately resulted in a goal in the waning moments.  Dex Norman saw his first action of the season in goal and made a number of nice saves. The final score was 3-1. Now it's off to Georgetown. We will see some really good teams there too. Let's hope that the boys take care of business and we don't determine any games in shoot-outs. Pack up your gear and take a couple days off.  We always have a great time there.

Warriors open strong at Georgetown - defeat Klein Collins 2-0

There was no jet lag today from the long bus ride to Georgetown. The boys started early and played well throughout the game. From the opening kickoff, if was obvious that the Martin men had come to play. The Warriors recorded the first goal of the game within the first minute of the match. Brandon Williamson started the scoring action by playing a great ball to Chris Schneider. Chris played the ball across the field to Stephen Brown. Brown displayed some fancy footwork and located his crease. Stephen then ripped a beautiful shot against a flatfooted Klein keeper.  The Warriors kept the pressure on with nice plays from Ian Smith, Casey Herd, and Williamson. Bryan Walker had many good opportunities to display his skill and speed in the first half. Brown would record the Warriors second and final goal of the match about 15 minutes into the first half. Stephen found some space on the left side and ripped his shot to the far post. Brandon recorded his second assist of the season. The half ended with Martin leading 2-0.

Martin controlled the bulk of the game. Collins had come into the match ranked #9 in the state on the TASCO poll. The Collins team was able to keep Martin off the scoreboard in the second half, but they were no match for the mighty Warriors today. Brown, Schneider and Matt Carroll each had good scoring opportunities in the 2nd half. On more than one occasion Carroll showed his speed on nice outside runs. But the disturbing habit of not scoring in the second half continues. Coach Naughton, as is his pattern early in the season, shuffled the alignment a little. This resulted with the Warriors recording the first shut-out of the season. Colin Booher, Casey Cartusciello, Jeff Mullin, Chris Weber, Quinn Markham and Chris Bush supported the efforts of keeper Kyle Butler to stop all attempts from Klein.

Results from the other games involving DFW area teams show #1 ranked Coppell, Creekview, and Allen all winning their first round matches.  Let's hope that we continue to win and show that Martin is among the state's elite teams.

Warriors continue Winning Ways in Georgetown
Defeat A&M Consolidated 1-0
January 21, 2005
By: Larry Brown

The Warriors continue down the path toward the championship of the Annual Georgetown tournament. The Martin defense recorded the second shut-out of the season, lead by the play of keepers Philip Venegas and Kyle Butler.

It appeared that Martin's early offensive prowess would continue as Stephen Brown and Chris Schneider had early scoring chances. Chris was also involved in a nice combination play with Casey Herd and Ian Smith which resulted in a shot on goal by Ian. Late in the first half, Bryan Walker had a great scoring chance on a breakaway, yet the Warriors could not find the net. The first half ended 0-0.

Martin came out strong to begin the 2nd half. The Warrior dominated the midfield with the play of Colin Booher, Theo Bruton, Patrick McMahan, Brandon Williamson, Schneider, Herd and Smith. Casey Cartusciello, Chris Weber, Jeff Mullin and Quinn Markham rejected all of A&M scoring attempts. Cartusciello made a potential game saving clear after Butler was forced to defend off goal. The Warriors had many scoring chances. Another nice combo between Smith and Schneider resulted in Chris ripping a shot that hit the crossbar. It appeared that the Warriors would finally get on the board late in the game when Stephen found himself on a breakaway. He took his shot, but the A&M keeper made the save. It would be the final seconds of the game before the outcome would be determined. Quinn started the play from the back playing a beautiful ball to Schneider. Chris knocked the ball down placing it in the path of the onrushing Brown. Stephen touched the ball passed the keeper and the best celebration of the season began.  As the A&M squad restarted the game the center ref blew his whistle ending the match. “Wow, that was close” was the feeling on the sideline. There was no doubt that the Warriors had outplayed their opponents today, but this game could have easily ended in a tie. Well, all the team needs to do tomorrow is win and they will play for the cup.

Martin's Tournament Frustration Continues
2-2 Tie with Cedar Park and No Advancement
January 22, 2005
By: Larry Brown

In their third match of the Governor's cup, the Warriors met Cedar Park for the F bracket spot in the Championship round.  With the 10 point system in place, the Warriors found themselves in an unenviable position. They trailed the local bunch by one point in bracket play.  For those of you that know me well, this game was the perfect example of why soccer can drive me, and I believe some of you, crazy.

In pre-game conversations it was discovered that Cedar Park was a one man team. It didn't take long to discover who that one man was. At about the nine minute mark, that man made the first of many trips to the turf. This first fall occurred in the box and was rewarded with a Penalty Kick. Cedar Park led early by a tally of 1-0. This type of play would be repeated throughout the match. The game was hard fought. However, Martin dominated the bulk of the game. The boys had bruised the goal post by the end of this match. Yet the Warriors were only able to muster the tie and they were shown the tournament exit for the second week in a row without losing a game.

All of the boys played very well. Without a doubt, I could make positive comments about every player who touched the field. Today, I was struck by the spirit of one player, Ian Smith.  Smith displayed the true “Warrior Spirit” all weekend. Injured early, Ian was determined to give his all in order to meet the team's goal of the championship. Bloodied, battered and bruised following this game, “Mini Butters” remained on the sideline long after his teammates headed to the bus. It was a struggle for him to remove his equipment. Possibly only his mother and I realized what a fight this day had been for him. It was ironic to me that so many former Warrior players were here today to witness this game, fine young men that I have had the pleasure to watch mature. I had seen many of them make the same type of efforts in years past. The Men's Soccer Program at Martin is truly special.  If you haven't realized it yet, we are watching boys become men with the help of Coach Naughton. Today we witnessed one “Super Sophomore” boy take another step toward manhood. Thanks, Ian.

Next Stop:  Martin Invitational Tournament!
Martin's Offense breaks loose to defeat Mansfield 5 - 0
January 28, 2005
By: Stan Mullin

Martin withstood a furious flurryfrom the Mansfield in the opening minutes of the game.  The staunch Martin defenders (Colin Booher, Chris Bush, Casey Cartusciello, Quinn Markham, Jeff Mullin and Chris Weber) were able to turn back each of the Tiger's early attacks.  Finally, at about the 10-minute mark, Colin Booher was able to pick a Tiger's pocket and launched one of his cruise missiles from about 35 yards out.  The ball found its way into the top part of the netting and Martin led 1 - 0.  From that point, the Warriors seemed to find their stride and kept Mansfield on the ropes for the remainder of the game.  Goals by Chris Schneider and Theo Bruton sandwiched between a pair of goals by Stephen Brown had the Tigers chasing their tails by the end of the game.  Stephen calmly collected a cross from Colin near the left post and shot it just inside the right post.  Chris Schneider efficiently tucked away a well-deserved penalty kick.  Theo snuck in his first goal of the season just seconds before the end of the first half, as a Chris Schneider corner kick was quickly redirected by Stephen to Theo, who had set up shot near the left goal post.  Theo made short work of the short shot, and Martin headed into intermission with a 4-goal cushion.
Although Martin's domination continued throughout the second half, the only additional score came on Stephen's second goal courtesy of an assist by Chris Weber.  It was great to see the Warrior scoring machine in action once again.

Martin defeats Sam Houston 5 - 1
January 29. 2005
By:  Stan and Larry

Martin scored early and often in the second game of the MIT, overcoming Sam Houston and choppy field conditions.  The first goal was scored on a sharp shot by Casey Herd, with an assist from Ian Smith.  The second goal was scored by Theo Bruton, who tucked away a rebound on a shot by Brandon Williamson.  Next, Stephen Brown got into the scoring act with help from Colin Booher.  Bryan Walker scored the fourth goal, courtesy of an assist from Patrick McMahan.  Chris Schneider closed out the scoring for Martin, with Colin Booher once again getting credit for the assist.

Martin defeats Irving 4 - 0, wins bracket A in MIT
January 29, 2005
by Stan Mullin

The Warrior offense was on fire once again, scoring four times in its concluding match of the Martin Invitational.  Jeff Mullin started the festivities by launching a long cross that connected with Ian Smith's head in the goal box.  Ian deftly skipped a header over to Stephen Brown on the left side of the goal, who then headed the ball over Irving's goalie and into the net for a 1 - 0 lead.  Casey Herd followed that with a blast that clanged off the post.  Soon after that, Colin Booher hit a high hard one that ricocheted off of the crossbar.  Martin increased the lead to 2 - 0 when Stephen passed the ball to Larry Crisafulli, who relayed the ball on to Chris Schneider in close on the left of goal.  Chris quickly controlled the ball and converted for the score.  Theo Bruton had a breakaway run late in the first half, but the Irving goalie was able to make the save.
Stephen scored his second goal of the game on a corner kick from Chris Schneider to make the score 3 - 0.  Stephen closed out the scoring with his hat-trick goal by intercepting a clearing kick from the Irving keeper at point blank range and immediately sending the ball back where it came from.
It bears mentioning again that the Warriors had a great tournament both offensively and defensively, outscoring their opponents 14 - 1 and registering the highest point total in all 4 brackets.
Goalies Kyle Butler and Philip Venegas and defenders Casey Cartusciello, Colin Booher, Chris Bush, Quinn Markham, Jeff Mullin and Chris Weber all had outstanding weekends.

Warriors begin District Play
Tie Cedar Hill 0-0
02/02/2005
By: Larry Brown

The Warriors began their District 7-5A season one day late due to field conditions and field availability. The team traveled to UTA on Wednesday to play the Longhorns from Cedar Hill.

There was a large amount of excitement around this game. It had been a number of years since the Warriors had  a district opponent the caliber of Cedar Hill. The game was very well played. Our boys had a number of scoring chances early. Stephen Brown and Chris Schneider put together a nice combination play that resulted in a shot by Chris that was just over the crossbar. Ian Smith had a great shot in the first half that was rejected by the longhorn keeper. The half closed scoreless.

Cedar Hill came out strong to begin the second half. However the defense played great! Casey Cartusciello, Colin Booher, Quinn Markham, and Jeff Mullin displayed their talents as they swarmed any true scoring chances. The offense had more chances in the second half. Casey Herd took his turn with a great attempt. Stephen had a breakaway. Colin almost scored on a great run from the back. At this point I recorded in my notes: “We will score!” it seemed inevitable. As time was running out the final and best chance presented itself. The Warriors had pushed everyone forward, multiple shots occurred and then the ball found Brown's foot. It appeared from the stands that the winning goal was on its way to the back of the net. But from seemingly nowhere, a Longhorn defender's leg came flying in to deflect the shot.  What a disappointment.  I had envisioned the same type of celebration we experienced in the late game victory against A&M Consolidated. It was not to be. Keeper Kyle Butler played great and recorded the Warriors' fifth shutout of the season. It's now off to Duncanville, another tough opponent.

District 7-5A Play Continues with
A Heartbreak loss to Duncanville
By: Larry Brown

The Warriors continue 7-5A play against archrival Duncanville on this beautiful Friday night. This was another highly anticipated game as these two teams compete for district supremacy. With the large crowd, this game had a playoff feeling.

This was a well-played, physical game. The Warriors got on the board first with an early goal. Stephen Brown found himself deep into Duncanville's end when he was able to gather a Panther mistake and finish.  At this point, I hoped this would be enough, but I knew it wouldn't be. The Panthers pick their game up and put significant pressure on the defense. Kyle Butler, Casey Cartusciello, Jeff Mullin and Quinn Markham played well in the face of Duncanville's pressure.   The Panthers scored the tying goal at the 18 minute mark.  Duncanville would get another goal on a high, looping shot before the half to make the score 2-1 Panthers.

The Warriors had a number of opportunities to score in the 2nd half. Colin Booher, Casey Herd, Chris Schneider and Brown each had their chances. There were post bruisers and close-in rebounds, yet the ball just would not find the back of the net. Duncanville would score again on a fluke goal to make the score 3-1. The boys truly displayed their desire to win. They were relentless and dominated the last 20 minutes. The Warriors played so well that some feel that the Panthers had to get a little “official” assistance to contain them.  Stephen and Bryan Walker connected in the waning seconds to bring the final score to 3-2.

Martin Gets Back on Track
Defeats Archrival Arlington Colts 3-0
February 9, 2005
By: Larry Brown

The site of Tuesday's night game was moved to Arlington High because of continued poor field conditions at Martin. Let's hope that we get some warm weather to dry out our home field. Yet even with the move, it appeared that everyone was notified and there was a great crowd at the game. As usual, the game means a lot to both teams.

The Warriors played well from the beginning of the game and they dominated the play early. If this had been a football game, the score would have been 12-0 by the 10 minute-mark. The Warriors were deathly with their field goals as no less than 4 split the posts. Unfortunately, we were playing soccer, and the Warriors were not finding the net.  The first goal of the evening came when Jeff Mullin pushed forward on a great outside run. Mullin was able to make his way to the Arlington end line then executed the perfect cross to Stephen Brown. With a leaping scissor kick, Brown knocked the ball home and the Warriors led 1-0 eighteen minutes into the game. There were many nice attempts in the first half.  Chris Schneider and Ian Smith both had good scoring opportunities but the half ended “too close for comfort”, 1-0.

The Warriors began the 2nd half by continuing to put the pressure on the Colts. Brandon Williamson sent a deflecting header to Schneider, who recorded his fourth goal of the season at the 6:30 mark. The midfield played great all night. Patrick McMahan, Bryan Walker, Matt Carroll, Williamson, and Casey Herd rode the Colts midfield hard the whole game and kept the momentum shifted in Martin's direction.  Colin Booher created another scoring chance with a long restart that found Carroll.   Carroll distributed to Walker who made a nice run to goal but shot just wide. Chris Weber also played great. Shuffling between midfield and forward, Weber displayed some very physical play. This type of play lead to the final goal of the evening as Weber found himself 10 yards out with an open crease. He ripped a shot on goal. The Arlington keeper moved to reject the shot. Fortunately, Weber's shot struck an unsuspecting Stephen Brown, which resulted in the perfect re-direct to defeat the Colt keeper. Great play Chris, you couldn't have planned it better!  With the score 3-0, Coach Naughton took the opportunity to display his bench strength. Larry Crisafulli, Cleatus Steele, Chris Bush and Sean Loveland had the opportunity to display their talents.

The defense was terrific. They recorded the sixth shutout of the season. Casey Cartusciello, Quinn Markham, Mullin and Booher rejected the Colts all night. They had to:  the keeper's mother was threatening them from the stands.  Kyle Butler lowered his goals against average to a team leading 0.7 per game as the Warriors celebrate their first district win of '05. Now it's off to Lamar.  Let's continue the run.

Warriors rock the house against Lamar!
Defeats Archrival Lamar Vikings 5 - 0
February 11, 2005

By: Stan Mullin

Here are the brief highlights of the Lamar game Friday night.  A more detailed (accurate??) report will follow soon, if Larry has to correct too many of my mistakes..

Kyle Butler and Philip Venegas combined for the shutout.  The defense, led by a nice "back-up" goalie save by Casey Cartusciello and suffocating marking by Quinn Markham, Colin Booher and Jeff Mullin held the Vikes at bay for the duration of the game.  Chris Bush, Sean Loveland, and Chris Weber stepped in during the second half to help keep the shutout string intact for Kyle and Philip.  Venegas made one especially notable save as he "stood up" a charging Viking to win a 50/50 ball in the box.

The midfielders, led by the spinning gyrations of Chris Schneider and unrelenting attacks by Casey Herd, Patrick McMahan, Williamson, Bryan Walker, Chris Weber, Matt Carroll and Chris Bush kept the Vikes on their heels and resulting in several very good chances and near-misses. Larry Crisafulli and McMahan took turns up top for the Warriors and kept up a constant barrage on the Lamar goal.  During the second half, Cleatus Steele and Sean Worley came in at midfield and David Parr moved in at the front line.  They created several good offensive chances for the Warriors as the game moved down the home stretch.
This was a truly dominating performance by Martin from start to finish.  They played together very well and truly as a team.  The box scores don't reflect all of the great effort that was put out by each and every Warrior that stepped on the field.

And, what's that?  Oh, yes...there were some goals scored, too!!  (Pardon the lack of details here - I'm typing this off the top of my head (and it's hard to keep my laptop balanced)).
1st Goal:  Stephen Brown on a nifty assist from Casey Herd on a nice through ball
2nd Goal:  Stephen Brown / Assist: Jeff Mullin (long header off of a short Lamar clearing of a Chris Schneider kick)
3rd Goal:  Stephen Brown / Assist: Colin Booher (pass)
4th Goal:  Stephen Brown / Assist: Brandon Williamson (pass)
and for a change of pace...5th goal:  a short but sweet PK by Jeff Mullin easily beat the Lamar keeper to the corner of the net.  I believe that it was Chris Schneider who burst into the box on a breakaway run before he was taken down from behind to set up the PK.

Way to go Warriors!
Martin defeats DeSoto 4-0
February 15, 2004
By: Larry Brown

Wow, what a night for soccer. On a beautiful spring-like evening, your Martin Warriors defeat the DeSoto Eagles by a tally of 4-0.

From the beginning of the game, the Eagles attempted to shut off the high-powered Warrior offense with the offside trap. This approach worked well for DeSoto early, as on many occasions the sideline official's flag was raised. It seem like DeSoto was more interested in making the quick push up than making any attempts to mark our players. This strategy would not work for long as the Warriors made the adjustments and unleashed their potent offense.

The score in this game could have easily been 10-0, as Martin had many good scoring chances in the first half. Chris Schneider and Brandon Williamson executed a nice combination play that resulted in a shot from Brandon just wide. Schneider was also the recipient of a crossing thru-ball from Stephen Brown. Chris ripped a shot on-goal but hit the post. Brown had a scoring chance early, too, as he found himself deep into the Eagle's box. With a couple of nifty moves, Stephen took his shot but was rejected by the Eagle keeper. There was outstanding keeper play all night by both teams. At the 13-minute mark, Kyle Butler made his best save of the season as he leaped high and long to reject a DeSoto shot. The Warriors finally broke the ice when Casey Herd launched a thru-ball that found Ian Smith. Smith defeated the talented Eagle keeper and the Warriors lead, 1-0. Brown would close out the first half scoring on a similar play.  Chris Weber launched the thru-ball this time from deep in the Martin end. Stephen raced pass the DeSoto defense and pushed the score to 2-0 at half.

The offensive fury continued in the second half, as I counted no less than 10 shots. Bryan Walker, Patrick McMahan, Schneider and Brown all created good scoring opportunities. That Eagle keeper had to feel like there was a target on his chest. Smith would record his second goal of the evening from Brown. Stephen closed out the scoring late as Sean Loveland placed a nice crossing pass from the end line that found Brown's feet as he raced to goal.

The defense played great all night. Chris Weber had an outstanding game. Returning to the back line, Chris made the defensive play of the evening. Late in the second half, a speedy Eagle midfielder broke loose on the outside. Like a flash, Chris ran him down and stopped the opportunity. Although DeSoto did not present many more challenges, Weber, Quinn Markham, Colin Booher and Jeff Mullin aided Butler in recording the Warrior's 8th shutout of the season.

The fun continues Friday night as the Warriors travel to Bowie to take on the Volunteers. Let's keep up the support as the first half of district play nears completion.

Volunteers fall to Warriors 8-1
February 18, 2005
By: Larry Brown

Well there was so much action in this game I'm afraid that I am going to have to revert to the Laura Bush style of game reports (Just the facts, just the facts). Following Tuesday's game where I felt the Warriors could have scored 10, tonight the boys almost did. The scoring recap is:

Colin Booher - Goal          Ian Smith - Assist                                 1-0
Chris Weber - Goal          Chris Schneider - Assist                    2-0
Schneider - Goal              Booher & Stephen Brown - Assist     3-0
Brown - Goal                     Schneider - Assist                                4-0
Brown - Goal                     Casey Herd - Assist                              5-1
Brown - Goal                     Unassisted (PK)                                      6-1
Sean Loveland - Goal     David Parr - Assist                                 7-1
Parr - Goal                        Loveland - Assist                                    8-1 (Final)

Everyone played well tonight, I should mention them all. With the game well in hand, Coach Naughton had the opportunity to let everyone play. A reward for all of the hard work the reserve players put in at practice. I say this ever year:  Martin could easily field two Boy's Varsity teams and each would do very well.

However, the story of the evening is that the fans and players got to experience one magical moment.  Late in the game, the reserves would continue the offensive dominance of the Volunteers.  With the score 7-1 and David Parr at forward, the team rose to their feet every time David had a scoring chance. With less than 2 minutes remaining, Sean Loveland made a nice outside run and crossed the ball to Parr. David completed the play with a sliding shot and the senior recorded the first goal of his varsity career.  The team erupted with joy. David was the star of the evening. For those of us that saw the warm embrace of his mother after the game, we knew that we had witnessed a very special moment. Thanks David!

 Warriors defeat Sam 4-0
February 25, 2005
By: Larry Brown

The Warriors completed the 1st half of District 7-5A play by defeating the Texans of Sam Bowie High by a score of 4-0. The Warriors find themselves in a solid playoff position as the 2nd half of District play begins. A recap of the season to date finds the Warriors ranked 6th in the area by the Dallas Morning News. The team is in the top ten in both defense and offense and boast the area scoring leader in Stephen Brown.

The Warriors offense got started early as Ian Smith and Brown combined to record the game winning goal in less than 30 seconds. Following a cross-field pass from Stephen, Ian launched a 20 yard shot that sailed over the Texan keeper just under the crossbar. It would be 24 minutes before the Warriors would score again. Chris Schneider would lace a corner kick perfectly through the box. The restart found Bryan Walker on the back post and Bryan redirected the ball and recorded his second goal of the season. Bryan would continue the outstanding play by hustling deep into the Texan box. Through sheer determination, Walker placed a pass in front of an onrushing Brown. Stephen finished and the Warriors lead 3-0 as the half concluded.

With the outstanding play of Casey Cartusciello, Jeff Mullin, Quinn Markham and Colin Booher, Martin held Sam scoreless. Kyle Butler and Philip Venegas combined in goal to record the shutout. Second half scoring was supplied by Casey Herd when he headed another corner from Schneider. The midfield controlled the game all night. Brandon Williamson, Patrick McMahan, Chris Bush and Chris Weber provided outside support and started many of the Warriors offensive runs. The reserves supported the effort with the terrific play of Larry Crisafulli, Matt Carroll, David Parr, Sean Loveland, Cleatus Steele and Blake Davidson.

Next week's games should be fun as the Warriors travel to Cedar Hill for the first time in years and the rematch with Duncanville at home Friday night. The Warriors have a chance to erase their early season missteps and show those Dallas County boys who is really the best!

Warriors tie Cedar Hill Again 1-1
3/01/2005
By: Larry Brown

The strange district season continues as the Warriors struggled again against Cedar Hill. I commented earlier in the season that it was great to have a more competitive district, I still believe that today. The boys are gaining much needed close-game experience that I believe will benefit them on their playoff run. Without a doubt, the Warriors were the best team tonight. They dominated play throughout the match. The score could have easily been 5-1, Martin, but the Longhorn keeper had a tremendous game. With all apologies to the Warriors' keepers, the Cedar Hill keeper displayed “All District” talent tonight.

This was an exciting game. The Warriors had many outstanding plays. The defense played especially well. Jeff Mullin made many nice stops deep in the Warriors' end. He displayed his ball skills by dribbling out of the back on many occasions. Casey Cartusciello played great. He made a terrific offensive run early in the match that nearly resulted in a goal. Quinn Markham tracked the speedy Longhorn forwards all night and also made a late game offensive push that nearly won the game.

The Warriors had many first half scoring opportunities.  However, the Longhorns got on the board first thirty-two minutes into the match. The Warriors came right back and leveled the game 15 seconds later. Chris Schneider and Bryan Walker combined on a quick push following the restart. Schneider laced a powerful cross that caught Bryan in stride and Walker recorded the only Warrior goal of the evening.

There would be many more chances, but none would find the net. Stephen Brown, Colin Booher, Casey Herd and Ian Smith all took their turn, but the talented Longhorn keeper rejected them all. Oh, well, there is always Friday night's game. Let's hope that the Warriors offense has a little more success. The Duncanville Panther's make the trip west and provides the Warriors a chance to display their true talents. This is going to be a great game. Let's show up en masse and support the boys.

Duncanville defeats the Warriors 1-0
March 4, 2005
By: Larry Brown

Well, the second half of District 7-5A play continues to look a lot like the first half. Results again repeated themselves as Duncanville defeated the Warriors by 1 for the second time this year.

Because of yellow card accumulations, the Warriors changed their alignment tonight. Without some of the key central midfielders, Coach Naughton moved the team from a 4-5-1 alignment to a 4-3-3. This move would put the pressure on the defense in exchange for more offensive power. The move worked well on the defensive end as Casey Cartusciello, Jeff Mullin, Quinn Markham and Ian Smith swarmed the field holding the Panther offense at bay. Kyle Butler was required to show his skill by rejecting shots. As before, the Panthers were able to score on a fluky shot. Although the offense made many great attempts, they were not able to find the net. So many times, it seemed like the Warrior offense was one crazy bounce or one Panther foot from getting off the tying shot.  The final score was Duncanville 1- Martin 0.

Warriors Return to Winning Ways
Defeat Archrival Arlington 2-1
March 8, 2005
By: Larry Brown

The Mighty Warriors returned to their winning ways by defeating the Arlington Colts by a score of 2-1. Due to field conditions and a track meet at Martin, this game was moved to Nolan High School. Martin has not had much success on turf this season. Tonight, though, the Warriors conquered the turf and the Colts and showed themselves to be the class of Arlington (even though the game was played in Fort Worth).

The first half was well-played by both teams. The momentum constantly shifted back and forth. Martin would make an offensive push, and then Arlington would counter back. The defense played great.  10 minutes in, keeper Kyle Butler made a terrific diving save.  Casey Cartusciello, Quinn Markham and Jeff Mullin were required to make many tough defensive stops, and they executed flawlessly.  Stopper Colin Booher would get involved in the offense. 28 minutes into the game he ripped a shot just wide. The best scoring opportunity of the half would come when Stephen Brown and Matt Carroll combined to get the ball onto Casey Herd's foot. I have struggled all year to come up with a theme for this year's team. I think I finally have it.  Last year was the year of the “Header”.  This year should be known as the year of the “Post”. Casey would continue this theme by ripping a shot that all believed was in the net, yet somehow the ball found the post and deflected away. The first half ended in a scoreless tie.

The second half was even more intense than the first. This game was very important to both teams' playoff opportunities. The Colts got on the board first, 5 minutes into the half. The Warriors leveled the match quickly as Brown was not to be denied. Stephen found himself deep into the Colts' box surrounded by the defense. With a couple of fancy moves and a lot of grit and determination, he spotted an opening and placed the ball past the keeper. This goal was the charge the Warriors needed. They followed the goal with their best offensive onslaught of the night.  The increase in pressure backed the Colts into their own end.  The Colts' keeper played great.  He rejected some terrific shots. Chris Schneider, Chris Weber, Bryan Walker, Herd and Brown would make many attempts. 11 minutes into the half, the Warriors were able to get the game-winning goal. The play began with a great punt from Butler. The ball found Schneider on the wing past the mid-stripe. Chris flicked a beautiful pass over two Colt defenders into open space. Brown was making the run into that space. The keeper came out but Stephen beat him to the ball. Brown was able to lob the ball over the onrushing keeper and into the net. The great celebration began was the best of the season. However, it was torture watching the clock run for the remainder of the game. For me, the last 5 minutes lasted an eternity. The Warriors continued to push the ball upfield, but were not able to cash in on an insurance goal.  The boys continued to play great and the defense held off the Colts. Arlington had very few opportunities in the closing minutes.

For those of us that were at the Booster Club meeting on Monday, we heard Coach Naughton express a concern about the Warriors' playoff chances (something he admitted he had never felt in years past). With this great victory, those concerns should be erased. If the boys take care of business for the remainder of district play, this game should provide the Warriors a spot in the state tournament. The fun is just beginning. I want to see everyone out for the DeSoto game Friday night. GO WARRIORS!!!

Warriors Slay Eagles 8-0
March 11, 2005
By: Larry Brown

Well I guess that I am going to have to do the same style of game report for the second DeSoto Game. I apologize, but Stan says that we would not have enough space to store on the website all the highlights from this game, as the Warriors scored early and often.  The scoring went as follows:

Goals                                             Assists
Chris Schneider                         Stephen Brown
Ian Smith                                    Schneider
Brown                                          Casey Herd
Brandon Williamson                  Jeff Mullin
Colin Booher                               Unassisted
Schneider                                   Brown
Bryan Walker                            Schneider
Smith                                           Herd (Wait, he called offside???)
Matt Carroll                              Unassisted

Tonight was special for a couple of players. Brandon and Matt scored their first goals of the season. Brandon collected a long cross from Jeff, sidestepped the defender and beat the goalie to the corner of the goal.  Matt took the ball to the goal and beat the goalie to score the final goal of the night.
Tonight was another opportunity for Coach Naughton to display the depth of talent that the Warriors possess.  Chris Bush, Sean Loveland, Patrick McMahan, Cleatus Steele, Blake Davison, David Parr, Larry Crisafulli, Chris Weber, and Theo Bruton all played quality minutes and kept the pressure on the DeSoto team up and down the field throughout the second half. I was impressed with the comments from some of the DeSoto parents when I heard comments like; “These guys are really good, too”. It was a pleasure to watch these players play so well.

Kyle Butler recorded his 8th shutout of the season and the results of the night moved the Warriors into 2nd place in District 7-5A. As district play nears completion, the team seems well positioned to make its playoff run.

Warriors Defeat Vikings 2-0
March 15, 2004
By: Larry Brown

Well, the weather sure took a run as the nice spring temperatures we had been enjoying were replaced by winter conditions. Due to these low temperatures, I elected to keep my gloves on instead of taking many notes.  As a result, this report will be short.

The Warriors first scoring opportunity came at the 7 minute mark, when Chris Schneider and Stephen Brown combined. A few minutes later, Colin Booher  ripped a restart that the Viking keeper was able to corral. The first goal of the evening came about 20 minutes into the match when Schneider and Brown combined again.  Chris lobbed a nice leading pass which dropped in over the Viking defense.  Stephen collected the ball and fired a volley past the Lamar goalie for a 1 - 0 lead.  The half ended 1-0.

Ian Smith was fouled in the second half, giving the Warriors a restart opportunity close to the box. Brown took the kick, bending a shot on goal. Lamar's keeper parried the shot, but Casey Herd jumped in quickly to clean up with a follow shot, recording the final goal of the evening.

This was a welled played game by both teams. I felt that the Warrior defense played particularly well. Tonight, the Lamar coach changed his alignment, moving his speedy All-District player up top. Where ever he went, Jeff Mullin or Quinn Markham was there to defend against his efforts. If, by chance, he got by them, Casey Cartusciello or Booher was there to sweep the ball away. Kyle Butler also had a nice game in goal as he recorded his 9th shutout of the season. Nice job, boys!

An update on Chris Bush: the report I got from the field is that the surgery went well. Let's keep Chris in our prayers as he recovers. Friday night is Senior Night. This group of boys has amassed a wonderful record. To date they are 54-9-8 over three years. Their district record is 30-2-2, with 2 undefeated championships. Everyone please show up at 5:30 while we honor these fine young men.

Senior Night Victory over Bowie
3/18/2005
By: Larry Brown

I'm sorry, but it has taken me quiet a while to write this game report due to other commitments. We had a beautiful evening to recognize our 2005 seniors. There were 14 players and managers and their families in attendance. As usual Coach Naughton started every available senior. Tonight's starting seniors included: Captains Brandon Williamson, Kyle Butler and Colin Booher supported by Casey Cartusciello, Jeff Mullin, Chris Weber, David Parr, Bryan Walker and Sean Loveland.

The first half was a bit ugly.  Although Martin outplayed the Vols, the boys were not on top of their game.  Colin had the first scoring chance at the 9 minute mark when he laced a restart just wide of the net. One minute later, Colin had another restart opportunity and missed just wide. The Warriors finally got on the board at the 14 minute mark when Booher showed his talents by snaking through the Volunteer defense and supplied a nice pass to Weber who finished with a high hard shot. Juniors Theo Bruton and Larry Crisafulli  would also have scoring chances in the first half, but the Warriors' lead was only 1-0 at halftime.

I've been around Martin for a few years and I don't think I have seen Coach Naughton as upset with his team at half as he was tonight. I don't know what he said, but it worked as the Warriors picked up their game in the second half. Williamson and Bruton combined early on a nice play that resulted in a shot. The second Warrior goal would come when Casey Herd would finish a nice combination play started by Chris Schneider and Bruton at the 11 minute mark. Ian Smith would enter the shooting fray a few minutes later with a great shot on goal that required the Bowie keeper to make a great save. Herd and Smith would combine at the 19 minute mark to put the Warriors ahead 3-0 as Ian recorded his first goal of the evening. The final goal occurred with Colin starting the action by playing a great pass to Walker on an outside run. Bryan would make a nice cross that found Weber's head, to make the final score 4-0.  The defense did a great job of bottling up the Vols until the offense could get untracked.

Warriors Wrap Up Playoff birth, Defeating Sam 4-0
March 22, 2005
By: Larry Brown

It has been a few days and games (Dallas Cup) for our family since this Tuesday night match was played, so my memory may be a little rusty. But I'll at least give you my game notes. The first Warrior scoring opportunity came within the first two minutes as Junior Patrick McMahan took the first shot. Senior Captain Colin Booher scored the first goal with Stephen Brown getting the assist. Stephen would score the second goal of the evening unassisted. The third goal of the half was recorded by Junior Matt Carroll, who had a nice game. McMahan made a cross that caught Carroll in stride.  Matt volleyed a beautiful one-timer past the goalie. The first half ended with the Warriors winning 3-0.

This game provided Coach Naughton the opportunity to display the talents of the entire team: Blake Davidson, Cleatus Steele, Sean Loveland, David Parr, Chris Weber, Larry Crisafulli and the rest supplied some great soccer. The final goal of the night would occur when Bryan Walker would finish a knuckling shot from McMahan, final score 4-0. Casey Cartusciello, Jeff Mullin, Quinn Markham continued to dominate in the back. They supported the combined effort of Seniors Kyle Butler and Phillip Venegas in goal, as the Warriors completed their 13th shutout of the season.

As the District season closes, the Warriors look well prepared for their playoff run. They boast area top ten standings in “Goals for Average” and in “Goals Against Average”. They have the area's leading scorer and a strong defense anchored by two senior keepers. The fun starts this week against FM Marcus. Everyone, please show up and support the boys.

Following this game, the team, parents, former players, Booster Club members past and present and the Naughton family recognized Coach Naughton's 200th victory. It was a very warm ceremony, as the coach was provided gifts and congratulations for a job well done.  In Chris' 12 years of high school soccer he was compiled an unbelievable record of 200 wins, 67 losses and 20 ties. His teams average almost 17 victories a year. I have stated many times before, but I'll say it again, those of us that have been fortunate enough to have our sons play for Coach Naughton are blessed. He is a great role model, mentor and coach and I am very proud of him. Great Job!   I am already planning Coach Naughton's 300th victory celebration with Taylor.

Warriors' Season comes to an end
With 2-1 loss to FM Marcus
March 29, 2005
By: Larry Brown

Well, it's never easy to write the last game report of the season. There is always the desire to keep the game going. The boys played very well tonight but came up a little short against Marcus.

The Warriors came out somewhat flat to start the match - they may have had a case of the playoff nerves. The Marauders had control of the game early. Marcus got on the board first at the 26 minute mark.  Eight minutes later, they scored again on a fluky play. As the half was coming to a close, it appeared that the Warriors would go into the locker room down 2-0. But the team would not quit. With less than 1 minute left, Ian Smith played a crossing pass to Stephen Brown. Stephen gathered the ball on a dead run and rolled a shot past the Marcus keeper. The score at halftime was 2-1, Marcus.

Coach Naughton must have given an inspiring talk in the locker room. The boys came back out playing at the level to which we had become accustomed. The Warriors dominated the second half. The team had multiple scoring opportunities. I had recorded in my notes at half; “Can we come back?” All indications were that we would. Chris Schneider, Bryan Walker, Theo Bruton, Colin Booher, Casey Herd, Brown and Smith each had scoring chances. But the ball just would not find the back of the net. The defense played very well. Keeper Kyle Butler was required to make only one save in the second half, but it was a very nice one.  Kyle needed to make one of his patented diving saves to keep the score close.  Casey Cartusciello, Jeff Mullin and Quinn Markham kept the Marauders at bay while the offense tried desperately to level the match. But that tying goal would not come.

I guess that I have been writing these game reports too long.  I close each year with the same corny statements. I just can't come up with anything better. For those of us whose senior sons have completed their high schools careers, the months of January through March will never be the same. All of the cold nights huddled in the stands will only be a part of our memories.  For those of us that remain, there are great hopes for next year. The Warriors should return a talented bunch.

I know that I speak for all the parents and fans of Martin's Men Soccer in thanking Coach Naughton and his staff for a wonderful year.  These are great men who truly care for our sons. As I exited the stadium tonight, I was struck by the comments of the Booster Club President.  He remarked to one of his guests that all the boys love their coach.  I think that this is one of the highest compliments any parent can pay.

Thanks, Coach Naughton!
